The Merced Avenue Stormwater Capture Project is an investment in sustainability, mobility, and community well-being. This project will create a new bike and walking path connecting Merced Avenue Linear Park to the Rio Hondo Bike Path, providing a safe and scenic route for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to improving connectivity, the project will enhance stormwater management by incorporating an underground drainage system and landscaping designed to absorb and filter water naturally. This will help improve local water quality while supporting a greener, healthier environment.

Today, an open concrete channel runs between Merced Avenue and Brockway Street before draining into the Rio Hondo. The project replaces that channel with an underground culvert and a landscaped bioswale that captures and naturally filters runoff. The space above becomes the linear park, with a bike and walking path that links the Merced Avenue path to the Rio Hondo path.
This project offers multiple benefits for residents and visitors:
The project is funded by a $9.8 million grant from the Safe Clean Water Program, ensuring that this vital infrastructure project is built to benefit both the environment and the community.
